Tongue and groove, commonly referred to as T&G, is created by boards that have been manufactured to have one protruding rib (tongue) on one edge and a groove on the other edge, so that the tongue from one board fits into the groove in the next board. When properly installed, the T&G joint is very strong and can withstand the expansion and contraction of the wood as temperatures change.
Our Select/Quality Knotty Western Red Cedar T&G is readily available in 1×4”, 1×6” and 1×8”, as well as 2×6”, and is perfect for interior ceilings, as well as exterior soffits and ceilings. We are also able to offer custom milled profiles, as well as Western Red Cedar T&G in clear grades.
To save money and time on the job, we can arrange to have your knotty Western Red Cedar T&G custom stained to nearly every color imaginable. Read more about that process HERE
As a warm and healthy alternative to drywall, Shiplap by Woodtone™ Interior Paneling is quality product you can count on. Re-imagined with superior product features, when installed, the classic visible gap between the boards is created by the unique design of the product and the classic “shiplap” appearance is achieved.
Manufactured from engineered clear pine, Shiplap by Woodtone™ Interior Paneling is a tongue and groove pattern (not a traditional shiplap pattern) for ease of installation, and arrives with a factory coat of white primer, ready to accept the color of paint of your choice.
Shiplap by Woodtone™ Interior Paneling is available in 12’ lengths in 1×6” or 1×8” with a penny gap. This product can be installed horizontally, vertically or diagonally, and will naturally make a small room feeler larger, whether installed on the walls or ceilings.
Big “Thank You” to our customer Dave for sharing these photos of his new sunroom addition that we supplied the building materials for. The combination of the painted Shiplap and natural Western Red Cedar T&G on the ceiling give this new space lots of character. We are also rather fond of the Douglas Fir trim and beautiful privacy fence he built using our 1×4” clear Red Balau Mahogany that can be seen out his new beautiful sunroom windows!
The exterior of the new sun room is clad with our knotty Western Red Cedar beveled siding. We provided him with pre-primed siding, which saves a big step during construction when it is destined to be painted.
With a wide range of specialty building materials in Western Red Cedar, Alaska Yellow Cedar, Doug Fir and other exotic and domestic hardwoods and softwoods, before your next project, be sure to visit us! We ship nationwide!
Budget friendly and naturally beautiful, bevel siding is the most widely-used Western Red Cedar siding profiles. It is produced by re-sawing lumber at an angle to produce two pieces thicker on one edge than the other.
At Cedar Country, we only supply knotty beveled siding that has sound and tight knots, such as the siding used on the newly remodeled Railroad Pub and Pizza. Prior to installation, we had the knotty bevel siding for the Railroad Pub and Pizza factory flood coated with a high-quality penetrating oil. This not only saves money and time on the job site, it also helps to protect your siding before and during installation. Available in 8-20’ even lengths, our natural knotty Western Red Cedar cladding is available in the following dimensions

11/16” x 8”
11/16” x 10”

Grown only in the Pacific Northwest coast areas of Alaska, British Columbia and Washington State, Alaska Yellow Cedar is not a true “cedar” and belongs in the cypress family. This species goes by many common names including: Nootka cypress, yellow cypress, Alaska cypress, Nootka cedar, yellow cedar, Alaska cedar, and Alaska yellow cedar.
Due to the short growing season along the Pacific coast, the growth rings of Yellow Cedar trees are tight, making it heavier, denser and stronger than either Western Red Cedar or White Cedar. Naturally resistant to rot and decay, Alaska Yellow Cedar shrinks very little over time making it an ideal choice for roofing.
We are pleased to offer top grade 18” Alaska Yellow Cedar shingles that are 100% clear heartwood and 100% edge grain. These are perfect for either sidewall or roofing applications. 100% edge grain shingles and shakes out perform grades that allow flat grain. This is because of the way the cedar cants are split (or sawn) to achieve a more dimensionally stable product. Edge grain shingles and shakes will have vertical lines on the exposed face. When looking at the butt end of an edge grain shingle, you will see the tight annual growth rings perpendicular to the surface. Edge grain shingles will lay flatter and are less likely to curl or cup.
Whether our Alaska Yellow Cedar shingles are installed as siding or roofing, they are best left to weather naturally and will turn into a uniform silver-gray. The integrity and unique properties of the wood are intact and will perform admirably for years with little maintenance. These many unique characteristics of Alaska Yellow Cedar makes it a very valuable and sought-after specialty building material by contractors, architects and designers, for both residential and commercial use.

This jaw dropping project in Half Moon Bay, CA is about one month away from completion. It took 12 years to get the building permit.
It was our pleasure to travel down to visit this project and meet with our client, Dave O’keefe of O’keefe Construction based out of San Francisco, after working on this project with him for almost a year. Each building is unique in its design, but similar enough to create a cohesive look on the property. One unit will be used as a vacation home for Dave and his family, while the other houses a small retail space on the ground floor, with residential living space above that will likely be rented out on Air B&B.
Due to the unique nature of our business and the relationships we have developed with mills throughout the Pacific Northwest, we were able to match the architect’s spec for the custom milled clear, vertical grain, 1×6” Western Red Cedar “nickel gap” tongue and groove he was looking for to complete the exterior cladding.
The fence around the property was constructed using 5 foot 1×6” clear, vertical grain Western Red Cedar boards. Not only did sourcing 5’ material save Dave money on the material and shipping, it also helped keep the boards super straight between the powder coated aluminum posts. A real win, win!
“In this industry, it’s tough to find people who do what they say they will. I’ve appreciated that about you.” Dave O’keefe, O’keefe Construction, San Francisco, CA

Hot in the building market right now, Clear Western Red Cedar T&G for both interiors and exteriors! Check out this stunning unique, contemporary home being built in the bay area of California. We worked closely with the builder to ensure the specs of the siding were an exact match to the architect’s design.
After we milled the 1×6 clear, vertical grain Western Red Cedar Fine Line Tongue and Groove to the specified pattern, we had a factory flood coat of Penofin Red Label “Cedar” penetrating oil applied to the T&G siding. Coated on all four sides and dried in a temperature controlled environment, the quality of finish that is achieved by this process just can’t be duplicated on the job site. No waiting for perfect weather!
We specialize in working with customers with unique building materials needs all over the US. Because we are located in the “heart of cedar country”, the only place in the world where Western Red Cedar and Alaska Yellow Cedar are grown natively, we are able to offer top quality materials and great prices.
Nothing beats the look and feel of real wood products. They bring warmth, beauty and charm that just can’t be duplicated with synthetic building materials. As natural wood lovers, when larger timbers and beams crack and “check” (as they always do), we believe it only adds to the special character and appeal that only natural wood can provide.
When a tree is harvested, about half of its weight is water. Soon after, it begins to dry and shrink about twice as fast along the growth rings than across them.
After it is milled, smaller lumber pieces will dry faster than wood manufactured into larger timbers, beams or heavier boards. As the outer layers of the bigger pieces dry and shrink, the center of the timbers will stay moist longer. All these changes cause the lumber to move, check and crack. The larger the timber or beam, the larger the cracks, as well.
This is NOT a bad thing!
Checking normally begins on the exterior surface of a timber and are not a structural concern. In fact, because it releases the tension that has built up, it actually makes the wood stronger.
All wood species will check differently. Denser exotic woods check more readily than softer woods, such as Douglas Fir and Cedar, however, checks in harder woods are generally smaller.
Ways to help minimize checking:
Generally speaking, higher grades of materials will have more stability. Especially when choosing “free of heart center” instead of “boxed heart” grade (as applicable)
When building with Douglas Fir, and some other hardwood species, some larger timbers and beams can be kiln dried
Use proper acclimation techniques. Store your wood off the ground, out of direct sunlight and allow the ends to breathe prior to installation
Seal cut ends of hardwood timbers immediately after cutting
Please note all wood timbers and beams will continue to move; take on moisture and shrink, especially those installed in exterior applications. Checking on large timbers and beams, in many cases, does not occur until well after it is installed. On a loose rule of thumb, softwood timbers (such as Cedar and Doug Fir) dry about 1” per year. This means it can take 6 years for a 12×12” beam to reach equilibrium to its surroundings, and there will be movement and change throughout the whole process.
