Bevel siding is produced by re-sawing lumber at an angle to produce two identical pieces, each with a thinner edge than the other. Traditionally installed horizontally, it provides a shadow line that varies with the thickness of the siding chosen.

Also commonly referred to as Clapboard siding, it is available in knotty as well as clear grades.  To learn more about our popular budget friendly knotty Bevel siding, please visit our blog on that by clicking HERE.

Clear Grades

  • Vertical grain – the highest grade available. It is a reversible product
  • A&Btr – graded and recommended for smooth face use only

Common Sizes for Clear Bevel Siding

  • 1/2×4”
  • 1/2×6”
  • 1/2×8”
  • 3/4×8”
  • 3/4×10”

Generally speaking, clear Western Red Cedar Bevel siding is sold “random length” from 3’ to 20’ lengths in bundles with specific piece counts.

For those projects that require a painted surface, clear, vertical grain, finger-jointed, primed Bevel siding is a great money-saving option and is readily available in the same common sizes as natural clear Bevel siding. Recommended for smooth face use in 16’ lengths, this siding is already primed with a good quality alkyd oil primer and is ready to install and paint.

Not able to use an “off the shelf” product or want something special made? We specialize in working with customers with unique needs all over the US and can mill custom clear Bevel siding in most any size in random lengths. To save money and time on the job site, we also can provide custom factory pre-staining or pre-priming to your clear Bevel siding. Code conforming fire treatment is also an option.

Prior to delivery, we had the clear, Bevel siding for this job sent out for custom pre-staining.
Upon arrival at the job site, it was ready to install.

Starting at the bottom of the wall, Western Red Cedar Bevel siding should be face nailed to studs with 1-1/4″ good penetration into solid wood. Place nail just above the overlap, using one nail per piece, up to a maximum of 24″ apart. Fasteners should be corrosion resistant and approved for installing Western Red Cedar. Either natural or color-matched stainless steel nails are a popular choice when installing premium clear Bevel siding. No caulking should be used between joints to allow the wood to expand and contract. Please see our blog General Guidelines for Installing Western Red Cedar Siding for more tips.

Half Moon Bay Project using our custom milled Clear, VG Cedar

This jaw-dropping project in Half Moon Bay, CA, is about one month away from completion. It took 12 years to get the building permit.

Custom milled clear, vertical grain Western Red Cedar specialty building materials we supplied for a project in Half Moon Bay, Ca include exterior cladding and fencing

Custom homes built in Half Moon Bay using our specialty milled Western Red Cedar products

It was our pleasure to travel down to visit this project and meet with our client, Dave O’keefe of O’keefe Construction, based out of San Francisco, after working on this project with him for almost a year.  Each building is unique in its design but similar enough to create a cohesive look on the property.  One unit will be used as a vacation home for Dave and his family, while the other houses a small retail space on the ground floor, with residential living space above that will likely be rented out on Air B&B.

Custom milled Cedar siding on a unique build in the Bay area of California

Due to the unique nature of our business and the relationships we have developed with mills throughout the Pacific Northwest, we were able to match the architect’s spec for the custom milled clear, vertical grain, 1×6” Western Red Cedar “nickel gap” tongue and groove he was looking for to complete the exterior cladding.

The fence around the property was constructed using 5 foot 1×6” clear, vertical grain Western Red Cedar boards.  Not only did sourcing 5’ material save Dave money on the material and shipping, it also helped keep the boards super straight between the powder-coated aluminum posts.  A real win, win!

Half Moon Bay Custom Home

Hot in the building market right now, Clear Western Red Cedar T&G for both interiors and exteriors!  Check out this stunning unique, contemporary home being built in California’s bay area.  We worked closely with the builder to ensure the siding specs were an exact match to the architect’s design.

After we milled the 1×6 clear, vertical grain Western Red Cedar Fine Line Tongue and Groove to the specified pattern, we had a factory flood coat of Penofin Red Label “Cedar” penetrating oil applied to the T&G siding.  Coated on all four sides and dried in a temperature-controlled environment, the quality of finish that is achieved by this process just can’t be duplicated on the job site.  No waiting for perfect weather!

Matching and Creating Historical Wood Siding Patterns

As a specialty building materials distributor, one of our areas of expertise is in assisting our customers in creating unique siding patterns out of Cedar or Douglas Fir, as well as matching historical wood siding patterns that are no longer commonly used.  Our staff is well trained and versed in helping customers throughout the United States in matching wood siding patterns to maintain a building’s historical architectural details.   From custom shiplap patterns to log cabin sidings, tongue and groove patterns to channel sidings, we work closely with our customers to ensure the old world charm and exact specifications needed are met.

Custom Western Red Cedar Siding Patterns

Just recently, we were contacted to help match this clear, vertical grain Western Red Cedar 10” drop siding (also referred to as Dutch Lap Siding) for a repair that needs to be done on a very old cabin.   Since drop siding is no longer commonly produced in a 10” profile in Western Red Cedar, we are working with the contractor to make just enough of the cedar siding to make the repair in the most cost-effective manner possible to maintain the look of the cabin.   In this case, since the siding is painted, it can be easier to create something that will look exactly the same as the existing siding when the new pieces are installed and coated.

Other projects we have had the pleasure of working with include providing this fully dimensional 5/4×12” clear, vertical grain Western Red Cedar planks for a historical restoration of a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Michigan.  The Clear Cedar planks are installed directly over mahogany strips, just exactly as Frank designed the look many years ago.

Need help matching a siding pattern?  Our process begins by carefully examining a piece of the existing siding.  It is carefully measured, and a “line drawing” is created and submitted to our customer for review.

Custom Historical Wood Siding Patterns for Sale

Next, we discuss the options of what material will be used to create the wood siding.  As mentioned previously, if the siding is to be painted, we have more options of grade and how the material will be manufactured.  If the siding will be left natural or stained, it will be of utmost importance to match the species and grade of wood exactly to what is on the building.  We specialize in providing custom siding patterns in Western Red Cedar, Alaskan Yellow Cedar, Douglas Fir, and other exotic and domestic hard and softwoods.
