Grown only in the Pacific Northwest, Western Red Cedar is a top choice for exterior wall cladding, roofing, and interior accents. Prized for its fine even grain, natural properties against rot and decay, and low maintenance needs, Western Red Cedar Shingles and Shakes are a very popular choice for exterior siding and roofing around the world.

We recently made a quick trip down to California and had the opportunity to visit a shopping center in La Jolla, CA, that we have been supplying our 24” Royal Western Red Cedar Shingles to for a re-siding project. Since this a working job site and there is limited storage for building materials, we ship them one to two pallets at a time.

Royals are our longest “off the shelf” Western Red Cedar shingles and can be installed with a maximum exposure of 7.5” on either walls or roofs with a 3:12 pitch or steeper. The individual shingles will range in width from 4” to 14”. There are approximately 60 to 85 random width shingles per bundle. Custom Cut Cedar Fence Boards

Extremely popular for outdoor fencing in the Pacific Northwest and beyond, Western Red Cedar is prized for both its durability and beauty. A properly constructed and maintained Cedar fence will perform admirably for many years because it is naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insect attack. Sourced from the most sustainably managed forests in the world, Western Red Cedar is environmentally friendly by being entirely renewable and biodegradable.

A Cedar fence can be as elaborate or as simple as desired. We recently supplied custom-cut Western Red Cedar boards for this beautiful fence in Anacortes, WA. Each fence board was milled out of old-growth, knotty Western Red Cedar into exactly 5/4″ x 6”. The craftsmanship and photos of this property defining fence for this new custom home were completed by Kreider Construction.

Swinomish Didgwalic Clinic Interior Doug Fir Paneling

We were extremely pleased to be chosen to provide the interior Douglas Fir paneling for the recently opened Swinomish Didgwalic Clinic near Anacortes. Designed by a local architect, the Douglas Fir interior tongue and groove paneling specified in the plans to warm the space was to be flush jointed. Since this is not an “off the shelf” profile for Doug Fir paneling, we worked with a mill to have the T&G custom manufactured out of 1×4 Clear, Vertical Grain; Kiln Dried Doug Fir blanks for the builder, Quantum Construction. This project was fast-tracked, designed, and constructed in less than a year.

Naturally resistant to rot and decay, good quality Western Red Cedar decking will perform admirably in our damp Pacific Northwest climate for many years to come. Milled beautifully, it lies flat and stays straight; and because it is soft, no pre-drilling or special tools are required for installation.

We offer Western Red Cedar decking in a variety of widths and thicknesses, as well as grades. With all of this, it is easy to see why it is readily chosen over more expensive hardwoods and manufactured decking.

To help you design and build your dream deck using Western Red Cedar, the maximum spans for the various sizes on a continuous beam are as follows:

Howell Deck – Hat Island

We recently received these pictures of our customer’s project out on Hat Island. They purchased the 2×6 Knotty Alaskan Yellow Cedar Decking from us last summer and recently completed the main floor deck. As there is no ferry service to Hat Island, the customer arranged transportation with a local barge company to get him, his truck, and his decking over to the Island a little bit at a time.

Alaskan Yellow Cedar is an ideal choice for decking in the Pacific Northwest climate. Naturally resistant to rot and decay, West Coast Indian tribes used it for canoes and totem poles. Alaskan Yellow Cedar is sought out for boat building, structural framing, siding, decking, and roofing in today’s marketplace. Due to its ease of workability, it is also used for intricate carvings and in making musical instruments.

This Alaskan Yellow Cedar was not treated and will be left to grey out, which is perfect for this beautiful island setting. The integrity of the wood is not compromised in any way if left untreated.
